What is the difference between lifespan and healthspan?

Lifespan is how long you live. Healthspan is the portion of that life spent in good health, free from serious disease or disability. Most longevity efforts aim to extend healthspan.

What is the single most important thing for longevity?

There isn't one magic lever, but not smoking and staying physically active — especially maintaining cardiorespiratory fitness and strength — have some of the strongest associations with a longer, healthier life.

Can you slow aging?

Research suggests the rate of biological aging varies between people and is influenced by lifestyle. Habits such as exercise, sleep, diet quality and not smoking are associated with slower biological aging. No intervention has been proven to stop aging.

Biological Age

More in the guide →

Can you reverse your biological age?

Some studies show biological age estimates can decrease after lifestyle changes, but evidence comes largely from small or short studies. It's more accurate to say you may be able to slow biological aging.

What's a good biological age?

A biological age at or below your chronological age is generally considered favorable, but the specific number depends on the clock used. Trends over time are more meaningful than a single score.

How often should I test biological age?

Most people who test do so every 6–12 months, using the same provider and method to keep results comparable.

Is it too late to start strength training at 60 or 70?

No. Studies show older adults — including people in their 80s and 90s — can gain strength and muscle with supervised, progressive resistance training. Start conservatively and consider working with a qualified trainer.

How much protein do older adults need?

The RDA is 0.8 g/kg/day, but expert groups have suggested around 1.0–1.2 g/kg/day for healthy older adults, and more for some situations. People with kidney disease should follow their clinician's guidance.

What's the best exercise for healthy aging?

A combination: strength training, aerobic activity, balance work and flexibility. The best program is one you'll do consistently.

Longevity Habits

More in the guide →

What is the most important longevity habit?

Not smoking and regular physical activity have among the strongest associations with longer life. For non-smokers, building fitness and strength is often the highest-leverage habit.

How long does it take to build a new habit?

One well-known study found a median of about 66 days to reach automaticity, ranging from 18 to 254 days depending on the person and habit.

Is intermittent fasting a longevity habit?

Time-restricted eating is being studied for metabolic health, with mixed results in humans. It may help some people with appetite control, but it's not essential for longevity. Diet quality matters more than timing for most people.

Cellular Health

More in the guide →

How can I improve my mitochondria naturally?

Regular aerobic exercise (including zone 2 and interval training), strength training, quality sleep and a nutrient-dense diet support mitochondrial health.

Do NAD+ supplements work?

They raise NAD+ levels in humans, but evidence for meaningful benefits such as improved longevity or performance is still limited and mixed. Discuss them with a professional.

Does fasting trigger autophagy?

Fasting stimulates autophagy in animal studies. In humans the timing and degree are uncertain because autophagy is difficult to measure directly.

Preventative Wellness

More in the guide →

What blood tests should I get every year?

Commonly discussed tests include a lipid panel, glucose/HbA1c, metabolic panel (kidney and liver function) and complete blood count, with others such as vitamin D or B12 based on risk. Your clinician will tailor the list.

Is preventative wellness the same as functional medicine?

Not exactly. Preventative wellness is a broad approach grounded in public-health guidelines and personal data. Functional medicine is one clinical model that emphasizes root causes; approaches and evidence quality vary.

Can genetic testing replace screenings?

No. Genetic testing adds context but doesn't replace recommended screenings such as blood pressure checks, cholesterol tests or cancer screenings.

What are signs of an unhealthy gut?

Frequent bloating, irregular bowel habits, discomfort and food reactions can suggest digestive issues, but they're nonspecific. Persistent symptoms should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Are probiotics worth taking?

Benefits are strain- and condition-specific. Some probiotics have evidence for particular uses (such as certain types of antibiotic-associated diarrhea). For general health, fermented foods and fiber are a good foundation.

Are at-home gut health tests accurate?

They can provide interesting information, but the science linking many results to specific actions is still developing. Use them to guide conversations with a professional rather than to self-diagnose.

Genetic Testing

More in the guide →

Is wellness genetic testing accurate?

At reputable laboratories, genotyping of common variants is generally highly accurate. The bigger source of uncertainty is interpretation: how strongly a given variant influences a real-world outcome. That's why good reports cite research and avoid overstating effects.

How is a wellness DNA test different from an ancestry test?

Ancestry tests compare your DNA with reference populations to estimate where your ancestors came from. Wellness tests focus on variants linked to nutrition, methylation, fitness and lifestyle traits. Some companies offer both, but the reports answer different questions.

Do I need a doctor to order a wellness genetic test?

Many consumer wellness tests can be ordered directly. Even so, it's wise to review results with a clinician or qualified professional — especially before changing supplements, medications or diet in a significant way.

What is the difference between methylation and DNA methylation?

Methylation is the general process of transferring methyl groups to many kinds of molecules. DNA methylation is one specific use — tagging DNA to help regulate which genes are expressed. Both rely on the same methyl donor, SAMe.

What is a methylation genetic test?

It's a genetic test focused on genes involved in the methylation cycle and related pathways, such as MTHFR, MTR, MTRR and COMT. The 10X Health Methylation + Genetic Test (opens 10X Health in a new tab; affiliate link) is one example; it pairs a report with a wellness consultation.

Can you improve methylation naturally?

You can support it by eating a varied diet rich in folate, B vitamins and choline, limiting alcohol, not smoking, and managing sleep and stress. Your genes won't change, but nutrient status — the part you control — often matters most.

Is having an MTHFR mutation rare?

No. “Variant” is a better word than “mutation” because these changes are very common. A large share of people carry at least one copy of C677T or A1298C.

Can MTHFR variants be fixed?

Your genes don't change, but you can support the pathway. Adequate folate, riboflavin, B12 and B6 help keep homocysteine in a healthy range for most people with common variants.

Should I avoid folic acid if I have an MTHFR variant?

Not necessarily. Folic acid still raises folate status in people with variants, and public-health guidance continues to recommend it for neural-tube-defect prevention. Discuss the best form and dose for you with your clinician.

Is nutrigenomics scientifically proven?

Specific gene–nutrient relationships (like MTHFR and folate or LCT and lactose) are well established. Broad genotype-based diet plans are less proven. The science is real but uneven, so judge each claim on its own evidence.

Can nutrigenomics help with weight loss?

Genes such as FTO are associated with body weight, but effects are modest and strongly influenced by activity and diet. Genetic insight may improve motivation, but calorie balance, protein, fiber, sleep and movement still drive results.

What's the difference between nutrigenomics and a food sensitivity test?

Nutrigenomics reads your DNA, which doesn't change. Food sensitivity tests usually measure immune markers in blood, which can change over time. They answer different questions. See our gut health guide.

Are at-home DNA tests reliable?

For the variants they're designed to read, reputable consumer tests are generally accurate. Their limitations are scope and interpretation — they read selected variants and aren't a substitute for clinical testing.

Can a DNA test detect diseases?

Diagnostic and some predictive clinical tests can. Wellness and ancestry tests are not designed to diagnose disease and should not be used that way.

How long does DNA stay the same?

Your inherited DNA sequence stays essentially the same throughout life, which is why one wellness genetic test can serve as a lifelong reference.

Wellness Genetics

More in the guide →

Is wellness genetics the same as genetic counseling?

No. Genetic counseling is a clinical service focused on inherited disease risk and medical decisions. Wellness genetics focuses on lifestyle personalization, though a consultation can still help you interpret results.

Which wellness genetic findings are most actionable?

Methylation and folate-related findings, caffeine metabolism, lactose tolerance and vitamin-related variants tend to be the most actionable because they map to clear, low-risk changes you can verify with labs.

Can wellness genetics guide my workouts?

It can offer hints — such as a tendency toward power or endurance — but training history, consistency and enjoyment matter far more. Use genetic hints to experiment, not to limit yourself.

What is the fastest way to improve energy and performance?

For most people, it's improving sleep consistency and duration. Pair that with a protein-rich breakfast, daytime hydration and well-timed caffeine.

Is HRV a good measure of performance?

HRV trends can reflect recovery and stress load, especially compared against your own baseline. Day-to-day readings are noisy, so look at weekly averages.

Do performance supplements work?

A few — like caffeine and creatine — have strong evidence for specific outcomes. Many others have limited evidence. Prioritize fundamentals and check any supplement with a professional.

Energy Optimization

More in the guide →

Why am I tired all the time even though I sleep 8 hours?

Sleep quality, timing, sleep disorders (like apnea), nutrient deficiencies, thyroid issues, stress and low activity can all cause fatigue despite adequate time in bed. A clinician can help identify the cause.

What should I eat for sustained energy?

Meals combining protein, fiber-rich carbohydrates and healthy fats tend to provide steadier energy than refined carbs alone.

Is it bad to drink coffee first thing in the morning?

Not necessarily. Some people prefer delaying caffeine, but evidence for a specific wait time is limited. The bigger issue is total dose and drinking it too late in the day.

Why can't I focus?

Common reasons include poor sleep, stress, frequent interruptions, smartphone habits, dehydration and blood sugar swings. If difficulty focusing is persistent and affects daily life, talk to a healthcare professional.

How long can a person focus?

It varies by person, task and training. Many people find 60–90 minute focused blocks followed by a break sustainable.

Does music help focus?

For some people and tasks, instrumental or consistent background sound helps; lyrics may interfere with language-heavy work.

How many rest days do I need?

It depends on training intensity, age, sleep and stress. Many people benefit from one or two lower-intensity or rest days per week plus a periodic deload week.

Is active recovery better than complete rest?

Light movement often helps people feel better and may aid circulation. Complete rest is also valuable, especially when fatigued or ill. See active recovery vs. rest days.

Should I ice bath after every workout?

Not necessarily. If your goal is strength or muscle gain, research suggests avoiding cold immersion immediately after lifting. It may be more useful during competition phases or for soreness relief.

What time of day is best for deep work?

It depends on your chronotype. Many people peak in the morning or late morning, but night owls often do their best work later. Track your energy to find out.

Does the Pomodoro technique work?

Timed work intervals with short breaks help many people start tasks and maintain focus. Adjust the interval length to your task and attention span.

Can I change my chronotype?

You can shift it somewhat with consistent light exposure, sleep timing and meal timing, but genetics sets a baseline preference.

What is a good HRV?

HRV varies widely by age, fitness and genetics, so compare against your own baseline. Rising or stable trends generally suggest good recovery.

Can breathing exercises really reduce stress?

Yes, research supports slow breathing and specific techniques like cyclic sighing for improving mood and reducing physiological stress in the short term.

Is stress always bad?

No. Acute, manageable stress followed by recovery can build resilience. Chronic, unrelenting stress is what causes harm.

Hormone Optimization

More in the guide →

Can you balance hormones naturally?

Lifestyle factors — sleep, stress, exercise, nutrition and body composition — strongly influence hormone function. Some hormonal conditions still require medical treatment, so persistent symptoms should be evaluated.

What are signs of hormone imbalance?

Symptoms such as fatigue, weight changes, mood changes, low libido, irregular cycles, sleep problems and temperature sensitivity can have hormonal causes — or many others. A clinician can help identify the cause.

Does strength training raise testosterone?

Resistance training can cause short-term hormonal changes, but its long-term benefits for body composition, insulin sensitivity and wellbeing are the more important effects.

Is biohacking safe?

Foundational biohacks like improving sleep and getting daylight are very safe. Some tools, such as extreme cold, prolonged fasting or unregulated supplements, carry risks — especially with medical conditions. Consult a clinician when in doubt.

What is the best biohack for beginners?

Consistent sleep timing plus morning outdoor light. It's free, low-risk and supports energy, mood and sleep.

Are wearables worth it?

They can provide useful trend data on sleep, HRV and activity. They're less accurate for some metrics (like sleep stages) and shouldn't override how you feel.

Sleep Optimization

More in the guide →

How much deep sleep do I need?

There isn't a precise target for individuals. In healthy adults, deep sleep often makes up roughly 10–25% of the night, and it naturally declines with age. Focus on total sleep and consistency.

Is it bad to sleep in on weekends?

Occasional catch-up sleep helps with sleep debt, but large shifts in timing can cause “social jet lag.” Keeping wake time within about an hour is ideal.

Do sleep supplements work?

Some people find certain supplements helpful, and melatonin can help with circadian timing issues such as jet lag. Evidence varies by ingredient. Check with a clinician, especially if you take medications.

Red Light Therapy

More in the guide →

How long does it take for red light therapy to work?

Most studies run for several weeks to a few months. Many people evaluate results after 8–12 weeks of consistent use.

Can you overdo red light therapy?

Yes — research suggests a “biphasic” dose response, where too much light may be less effective. Follow device guidance.

Is red light therapy the same as infrared sauna?

No. Red light therapy uses specific low-level wavelengths without significant heat; infrared saunas primarily heat the body.

How cold should a cold plunge be?

Beginners often start around 50–59°F (10–15°C). Colder isn't necessarily better — duration and consistency matter more.

Are cold showers as good as cold plunges?

Cold showers are less intense but still trigger a stress response and are a practical, accessible starting point.

Should I cold plunge before or after a workout?

If building strength or muscle is your goal, avoid plunging right after lifting. After endurance sessions or on rest days is generally fine.

Optimization Habits

More in the guide →

How many habits should I start at once?

One or two. Add more once they feel automatic — often after several weeks.

What if I miss a day?

Research suggests missing an occasional day doesn't significantly affect habit formation. Resume the next day.

Should I track my habits?

Simple tracking can boost motivation. Keep it lightweight so it doesn't become a burden.
