What is Allostatic load?

Quick answer

Allostatic load: definition

Allostatic load is the cumulative wear and tear on the body caused by repeated or chronic stress and the effort of adapting to it.

Allostatic load, explained

Your stress systems (including cortisol and adrenaline) help you adapt to challenges — a process called allostasis. When stress is frequent, prolonged or poorly switched off, the adaptive systems themselves begin to cause strain.

Researchers estimate allostatic load using combinations of markers such as blood pressure, cortisol, inflammatory markers, glucose and waist circumference.

Why it matters

High allostatic load is associated with poorer long-term health. Sleep, movement, social support and recovery practices help keep it in check.
