COMT (catechol-O-methyltransferase) is an enzyme that uses methyl groups to break down catecholamines such as dopamine, adrenaline and noradrenaline, as well as catechol estrogens.

COMT, explained

A common variant (Val158Met, rs4680) changes enzyme activity. Slower COMT activity is associated with higher dopamine levels in the prefrontal cortex, which has been studied in relation to cognition and stress response.

Because COMT uses SAMe as a methyl donor, it links neurotransmitter metabolism to the methylation cycle.
